COVID-19.....
Although in my first post I stated that this blog is more geared toward issues involving urban development and gentrification, I wanted to discuss this current issue. I feel that this is all we are currently seeing in media and is also the topic of every discussion.
The Corona Virus is causing mass hysteria here in America. In LA County we can definitely feel the anxiety and urgency to gather cleaning supplies, medicine, soap, and of course hand sanitizer and toilet paper. Which these items are scarce. I'm sure anyone who has social media has seen the posts (and memes) of people frantically hitting up their local target, grocery store, and Costco to find there is little to nothing left on the shelves. People are lining up around entire parking lots, just waiting to get inside and grab the last of whatever is currently available. Due to this panic, people are buying in bulk and more often, which results in shortages. This we are beginning to slowly experience.
Many, if not all California college campuses have closed indefinitely and moved classes online. In a matter of a few days, if not, what felt like a few hours, we received news of Santa Monica College closing campus, Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson becoming infected, two NBA players of the Utah Jazz becoming infected, and as a result the rest of the NBA season has been suspended. Things are getting very serious now.
People are realizing we need to be very precautious in protecting ourselves and watch for any symptoms and always wash your hands. This also makes me think of high healthcare costs and what would someone do, who did not have healthcare, and they believe they may be infected? This can be a huge factor as to why someone who may have been exposed to the virus won't seek help. If anyone is experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 absolutely call your doctor and seek advice. There have been many advisories to call your local doctor or hospital before going out into public. Some people are also being self-quarantined. If someone suspects they may be infected, testing is free. In this clip Katie Porter is discussing the major public health issues to the CDC, as well as the reasons as to why everyday people may hesitate to get checked. Many people do not have healthcare and will not seek medical attention. The elderly are also at high risk. Looking at the epidemic from a socio-economic perspective. Many non-white, lower income residents do not have healthcare and do not have the same access to medicine as someone in a more affluent area would. It is the government's responsibility to ensure all citizens are protected, educated, and have access to get the help they deserve, if needed.
